THE DUCHESS OF MALFI

Based on a true story

The Duchess of Malfi

by John Webster

In March 2009, at The White Bear, BlackSun staged their first production. A macabre tale of murder, madness and revenge in Renaissance Italy, it proved as popular now as since its first performances at the Blackfriars Theatre and Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in 1614. Violent and disturbing, the play is also a profound meditation on faith and death and the journey of the soul and asks challenging questions of our position in society and the purpose of our lives within a darkening world.

Production at The White Bear Theatre, Kennington 3-22nd March 2009

Based on a true story, John Webster's macabre tale of murder, madness, and revenge in Renaissance Italy has proved popular since its first performances at the Blackfriars Theatre and Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in 1614. Violent and disturbing, the play is also a profound meditation on faith and death and the journey of the soul and asks challenging questions of our position in society and the purpose of our lives within a darkening world.

We wanted to tell Webster's dark tale in all its dark simplicity. Over one month we held speech and text drivenrehearsals, actors pursued research of the Renaissance mind and body and our Duchess ordered people about in Harrods.

What was created was epic.
